What could be better than a summer vacation in Agistri? To get away somewhere not too far from Athens, to get a dose of island air with a dose of carelessness. You see, the Argosaronic is one of the first choices for escape when the temperature starts to rise.
And summer in Agistri Island is always a good idea. We decided to go to Agistri with our kid without our car. To take the necessary things, rent two bicycles with a child seat on the island and enjoy our trips in a different way. Definitely more economical and more fun, unless you plan to bike in the afternoon, which is best avoided. So off we went to explore another one of our Greek islands.
Summer accommodation in Agistri
Accommodation was a bit of a one-way street to us. Since we decided not to take a car, our place of stay would be Megalochori. This is because the catamarans dock at Megalochori, while the ferry boats arrive at the port of Skala and also carry passengers. There is also a difference in the duration of the trip. The catamaran takes 50 minutes while the ferry takes 1:10. Of course, we didn’t regret it at all, because Megalochori is much more picturesque and quieter for a family. Of course, if you want more life and a lot more people, then Skala is the ideal destination for you.

Transportation to Agistri Island
If you don’t have a car or motorbike with you, there are many solutions for transportation to Agistri. The first one is to rent a bicycle like we did. The bikes have baskets to carry your stuff. Also, the rental companies can install a child seat on the bike if you request it. The price of the bike varies depending on the rental period. It is advisable to call first and book a price in advance. If it costs as much as transporting a car or scooter around the island, it’s definitely not worth it.
Another means of transportation is the island bus, which runs daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. to the settlements and outlying beaches of the island. And it is definitely the most economical way of transportation. Finally, you can hire a taxi, which is advantageous for more people and the prices are not standard, so it is advisable to check first.
Megalochori in Agistri Island
Megalochori is the capital of Agistri with its natural port, which is the largest on the island. Is the largest settlement of Agistri, with 561 inhabitants. You may have seen Megalochori called “Mili” because of the many windmills that used to exist in the settlement.

I believe that Megalochori is more representative of the local life of the inhabitants. It has a more authentic character, less touristic. The settlement is full of picturesque cobbled streets that form a beautiful network of alleys that we enjoyed exploring on foot and by bike. Two-story houses, traditional stone and brick mansions and beautiful flower beds.
And many of the village’s tavernas are housed in these adjoining buildings, such as “Konaki” and “Sailor”, which serve excellent quality food.
In Megalochori, in the heart of the settlement, we found the church of Zoodochos Pigi, built in 1885. It celebrates on Easter Friday when there is a festival. Going down to the beach we meet the church of Agios Georgios. This chapel (built in the 18th century) is known for its floor, which was paved with Maltese slabs.
Agistri: Skala
Skala is 2 km from Megalochori and is characterized as the “cosmopolitan” part of the island. Unlike Megalochori, Skala has more tourist shops, more beach bars and restaurants. All very well maintained we would say.
The landmark of Skala is undoubtedly the imposing white church of Agioi Anargyroi with its huge blue dome.
The restaurants and fish taverns offer a wide variety of fresh fish and more. You will also find cooked meals or meals of the hour, accompanied of course by wine.
If you are visiting the island with children, you should know that in both settlements there are playgrounds in excellent condition.
Beaches in Agistri
We didn’t visit many beaches because we only had a few days and we were traveling by bike. But the island is famous for its good beaches and in summer it’s a mess in Agistri. So let’s talk about the beaches.
In Megalochori there is an organized beach, shallow and with fine sand for a child to play. I can say that the water did not excite me at first, but when I caught some borealis it was wonderful.
Much clearer and swimming became more enjoyable. Directly from the port there is also an unorganized stretch of beach north of the village. If you’re looking for peace and quiet and beautiful clear water and don’t mind a short hike, Bahos beach is for you.
On the beach of Skala there are now many places to swim. We visited Skala twice for swimming. Once you get to the settlement, the beach and the seabed are very coarse pebbles, less crowded and the water is beautiful.
As you go further into the settlement, the beach bars become more numerous. When you reach the end of the road where the church of Agioi Anargyroi is located.
You better choose to swim near the nose which has very nice clear water and fine sand or on the far right in the small bay which is organized with sand and very shallow water for the little ones to enjoy.
To the left of Skala, following the coastal road to the southeast, is the rocky area of Skliri. Skliri has several new tourist accommodations, nestled in the pine trees, with a very nice view of the Saronic Gulf and crystal clear, green-blue waters.
Less organized beaches on the island of Agistri
Other beaches that are definitely worth a visit and are considered the most beautiful on the island are the pebbled and famous Halikiada and Aponissos, which is described as the island’s little paradise on earth.
North of Megalochori the road leads to the picturesque sandy beach of Dragonera, which consists of Small and Big Dragonera. In Megali Dragonera there is a canteen where you can buy the necessary things.
So don’t waste any time. Book now a trip for your next summer in Agistri. The smallest inhabitable island of Argosaronikos.
