We have a great offer for a day trip just 150km from Athens .Are you ready for an excursion to Evrostina. Have you ever heard of the village of Evrostina (or Zaholi) and the Mill Stream?
The village of Evrostina is located in mountainous Corinthia at an altitude of 750m. It is only 12 km away from Derveni. When approaching Derveni, leave the highway and follow the signs to the left, which will take you to the villages of Rozena, Koumaria and Evrostina. The road has no sharp bends for a long time and the route is pleasant.
Evrostina
We arrive in the village of Evrostina. Evrostina (or Zaholi) is a small picturesque village. It has a long history, dating back to the year 1500, and gave birth to important chiefs of the ’21 revolution.
At the entrance of the village we first encounter the famous architectural church of Agios Georgios, with its 17 domes and seven cypresses, built in 1811. If you want, you can climb the 198 steep steps to the church and get your soul out, like I did, or you can arrive comfortably and relaxed by car, like Kostas and Dimitris did.

As soon as I climbed the church, the first thing I did was turn around and enjoy the view of the village and the Corinthian Gulf, and it was something unique. My eyes could not get enough of such beauty. Around the church we discovered the stone fountains with cool water flowing out, just what we need to quench our thirst.
Crossing the main street of the village we see the two taverns of the village and a small shop selling local products. According to the last census, the village has only 36 permanent residents. The village of Evrostina, however, is visited every weekend by hundreds of visitors who come to see the mill stream.
Excursion to Evrostina: The stream of the mills
We park our car along the asphalt and begin our acquaintance with the mill stream. The Zaholi River flows through the area, creating an idyllic place for walks, with ponds and small waterfalls.

A place loved by children and adults alike. First, we will stop at the small pond with wild geese, which we will observe for an hour before continuing to the trail that starts from the pond.

The hiking trails in the the stream of the mills are easy, without any degree of difficulty, even for a toddler like Dimitris, who had no difficulty at all. Of course, it requires a bit of attention. For example, if you want to follow the whole trail (or a large part of it), we would advise you to wear appropriate footwear, as the trail is muddy and slippery in many places.
On the other side of the road, the trail is wider and paved. With beautiful waterfalls, stone fountains and small bridges. We didn’t need anything more to be happy. The sweet chirping of birds and the shade of tall maple, chestnut and pine trees kept us company.
In fact, the forest of Evrostina is a small paradise drowned in green, which made me so happy. We used a little imagination with Dimitris and turned the mill stream into the forest of the elves, where we had a great adventure.
Time for lunch in Evrostina
But walking gives you an appetite and so it was time to sit down for lunch at the “Mansion of Zaholi”. If you are a parent it is the best choice because at the back there is a very well organized and safe playground.
The tavern is very spacious and the environment is pleasant. We tasted good appetizers, ate meat of excellent quality and drank local wine.
The other tavern in Evrostina is called “Korais” and it also has a very nice place to sit inside and outside. The Archontiko of Zaholi and Korais are famous as two of the best taverns in Corinthia.
Panagia Katafigiotissa in Evrostina
On the way back we stop at Panagia Katafigiotissa with its beautiful view of the Corinthian Gulf and the villages of mountainous Corinth, which look like small paintings hanging on the mountainsides.
In the area “shelters” and inaccessible caves and steep cliffs, the Zacholites had taken refuge during the Turkish occupation to hide and avoid the persecution of the conquerors.
Panagia Katafigiotissa was built in 1782, but it did not have the form it has today. The church is sheltered from landslides, built on a carved rock, and to get there you have to go down some steps, which were closed when we went. Of course, just looking at it from 40 meters up gives you the creeps.
Our next stop on this trip was the Area Synest theme park, which we will tell you about in our next article.
